As a realtor, I recognize that in the Texas Hill Country, wildlife habitat exists at the discretion of private landowners. Quality habitat requires a commitment to providing the basic habitat needs of food, cover, water, and space, all suitably arranged. In my real estate business I seek to partner with folks who are equally passionate about stewardship of the land. Land fragmentation in the Hill Country can be detrimental to habitat, but it doesn’t have to be. In this regard, I follow the simple wildlife management philosophy of Aldo Leopold:
“…game (wildlife) can be restored by the creative use of the same tools which have heretofore destroyed it – axe, cow, plow, fire and gun. The favorable alignment of these forces sometimes came about in pioneer days by accident … Management is their purposeful and continuing alignment.”
The key to developing and maintaining quality wildlife habitat in our Hill Country, then, is this “purposeful and continuing alignment” of management tools, regardless of property size.
